Hard Water Solutions for the High Desert

John’s Plumbing and Rooter has improved High Desert water since 2000. We are a family-owned, licensed plumbing contractor, and we install and service water softeners, filtration, and reverse osmosis for homes and businesses across Hesperia, Victorville, Apple Valley, Adelanto, Barstow, Big Bear, Oak Hills, Phelan, and the wider San Bernardino County. Better water makes a daily difference, and getting there starts with knowing what is actually in your water. That is true whether you are on city water in town or a private well out past Phelan and Oak Hills.

Most of our calls come down to one thing: High Desert hard water. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, water above 10.5 grains per gallon is classified as very hard, and High Desert groundwater commonly tests in that range. Those dissolved minerals are what leave scale in your pipes and water heater, spots on your glasses, and a film on your skin.

Hard water is not just an annoyance. The same scale that builds up on a faucet builds up inside your plumbing and appliances, shortening the life of a water heater and clogging fixtures over time. The good news is that hard water solutions are straightforward once you know what you are dealing with, which is why we start every job by testing your water. A little prevention here saves a lot of money on appliances and repairs down the road.

We do not push the most expensive system on the shelf. We test your water, explain what it shows, and recommend the right water treatment for your home, whether that is a softener, filtration, reverse osmosis, or a combination. We install trusted equipment like AquaSure, give you the price before any work starts, offer water treatment financing, and run specials on softeners and filtration when they are available. Either way, you will know your options and the cost before you commit to anything.

Our Water Quality Services

A water softener removes the calcium and magnesium that make water hard, protecting your pipes, appliances, and skin. Our water softener installation sets up the right size system for your household, including trusted AquaSure water softener equipment, so the scale and spots stop for good. You will notice the difference the first time soap actually lathers.

If your water tastes bad, smells off, or you just want cleaner drinking water, water filtration is the answer. We install whole house water filters and reverse osmosis systems, so the water from every tap, or just the kitchen, is fresh and clean. We size the system to how you use your water, from a single drinking tap to the whole house.

Signs You Have Hard Water

Hard Water Spots on Dishes

Cloudy spots and film on glasses and dishes straight out of the dishwasher are classic hard water spots on dishes. A water softener installation clears them up for good.

White Buildup on Faucets

Chalky white buildup on faucets, showerheads, and around drains is mineral scale left behind by hard water. The same buildup is forming inside your pipes where you cannot see it. Left untreated, that scale narrows the pipe and stiffens valves over time.

Dry Skin and Hair

If your skin feels dry and your hair feels filmy after a shower, hard water is often the cause. Dry skin from hard water is one of the first things people notice clearing up after a softener goes in. Softer water tends to leave laundry feeling softer and looking brighter too.

Water Tastes or Smells Bad

If your water tastes bad or has an odor, filtration can fix it. A water filtration or reverse osmosis system removes what is causing the taste so your drinking water is clean and fresh. Many people stop buying bottled water once the tap tastes right again.

Soap That Will Not Lather

Hard water fights soap, so you use more of it and still feel residue. Softer water lathers easily, which means less soap, cleaner laundry, and dishes that actually come clean. Most households cut their soap and detergent use noticeably after softening.

Appliances Wearing Out Early

Scale buildup makes water heaters and appliances work harder and fail sooner. Treating the water protects the equipment you have already paid for. A softener often pays for itself in the water heaters and appliances it saves.

Why Choose Us for Your Water

We start with water quality testing so we know exactly what is in your water, hardness and all, before we recommend anything. No test, no guessing. The test takes only a few minutes and tells us everything we need to know.

Some homes need a softener, some need filtration, some need both. We recommend the water treatment that fits your water and your budget, not the biggest system we can sell. The goal is water you are happy with, at a price that makes sense.

We install trusted, proven equipment like AquaSure, sized correctly for your household, so your system performs and lasts. Good equipment installed right is what keeps a system trouble-free for years.

You get the price before work starts, financing on larger systems, and you can ask about current specials on softeners and filtration.

Related Plumbing Services

Hard water and your plumbing are connected. The same scale that spots your dishes shortens the life of a water heater, which is why our water heater services and water treatment go hand in hand. Scale also builds up inside your pipes and water lines over the years, and clean, soft water is easier on every fixture in the house. You can always browse our full range of plumbing services.

Don't Just Take Our Word for It

Our family has trusted these guys with our plumbing for years and they always do great work! Had some plumbing issues with the toilet in the masterbath and they took care of it right away. Last year our hot water heater broke and they were able to replace it quickly and for a really affordable price. This week our garbage disposal broke and we knew exactly who to call!

Highly recommend this company, especially Levi, who did a beautiful job on our hot water heater last year and on our sink and garbage disposal this week. Levi is very professional- he always does an awesome job and gets it done so fast! Thankyou, Levi/ John’s Plumbing & Rooter! You guys are the best! 🥳🫶🏻

Levi fixed our interior leak, our copper pipe in the master bathroom, angle stops/shut off valves, the ball valve and water pressure regulator. He explained everything he was doing as my husband and I watched. He was very patient with our questions and communication was always open. He got our water running and made sure any defects were addressed. Very grateful for his work!

John’s plumbing was excellent, Levi showed up within an hour and got my backed up drain cleared. Awesome customer service, Levi was very thorough and explained what he was doing and what could’ve caused my backup. Definitely recommend John’s plumbing.

This company was amazing, I called them for an emergency call due to a PCV pipe busting in my backyard. John had Levi out here in less then an hour and was able to get the job done in 30 minutes. I would highly recommend them for any related service needs.

This company was very affordable when I needed some work done on the weekend. The employee, Levi, was very professional and did quality work. Five stars.

Our kitchen flooded. Edgar called and came out earlier than scheduled and we needed him. He went right to work, explained the challenges, and solved them completely. Our kitchen is fixed and we have a beautiful new faucet too. Thank you John’s Plumbing!
We feel the price was quite reasonable. Actually, Edgar went beyond our expectations.

I had an emergency with a toilet. I had called a previous plumber and they had no openings for the same day. Barstow to Big Bear & Everything in Between

From our Hesperia shop, we cover the core Victor Valley and the towns around it. On the valley floor that’s Victorville, Apple Valley, Adelanto, and Barstow. Out in the rural stretches it’s Oak Hills, Phelan, and Pinon Hills. And up in the mountains it’s Big Bear, Crestline, Lake Arrowhead, and Wrightwood, where freeze protection matters once winter hits.

From our Hesperia shop, we cover the core Victor Valley, the densest stretch of the High Desert.

Scattered homesteads, larger lots, and plumbing issues from older homes and rural water lines.

Elevation changes everything. We handle freeze damage, pipe bursts, and hard-water scale.

Water Quality Questions

Don’t see your question? Call us directly — we’re happy to walk through any plumbing question before you commit to anything.

Is Hesperia water hard?

Yes. Like most of the High Desert, Hesperia sits on hard groundwater. Water hardness in Hesperia commonly lands in the very hard range the USGS defines as above 10.5 grains per gallon, which is why scale and spots are so common here. We can test yours to see exactly where it falls, and knowing your real number is the first step to fixing it.

A water softener installation handles hardness, the scale and spots. Water filtration and reverse osmosis handle taste, odor, and contaminants. Many High Desert homes benefit from both, and our water quality testing tells us which your home actually needs.

Reverse osmosis is a water filtration method that pushes water through a fine membrane to remove dissolved solids and contaminants, leaving very clean drinking water. We install both under-sink reverse osmosis and whole house water filter systems, and we will explain the difference so you only pay for the coverage you actually want.

Yes. Water quality testing is the first step on every job. We check hardness and what else is in your water, then recommend the right treatment based on the results, not a sales script. It takes only a few minutes and it shapes everything we recommend.

Yes. We offer financing on larger systems, and we run specials on softeners and filtration when they are available. Ask us about current offers, and check our specials page before you book.
