Garbage Disposal Repair & Installation in Hesperia & the High Desert
Get Your Disposal Grinding Again
A disposal that hums, jams, or leaks under the sink is an easy fix or a quick swap, and you should never reach in to find out which. We handle garbage disposal repair and garbage disposal installation for homes and businesses across Hesperia, Victorville, Apple Valley, Adelanto, Barstow, Big Bear, and the rest of San Bernardino County. Disposals are part of the plumbing fixtures we service, and if the clog is downstream in the pipe, that is drain cleaning.
Garbage Disposal Repair and Installation for the High Desert
John’s Plumbing and Rooter has repaired and installed High Desert disposals since 2000. We are a family-owned, licensed plumbing contractor serving homes, businesses, and municipal clients across Hesperia, Victorville, Apple Valley, Adelanto, Barstow, Big Bear, and the wider San Bernardino County. A garbage disposal is a small unit that causes a big headache when it quits, and most problems are quick to sort out. A working disposal keeps the sink draining and the kitchen moving.
A disposal that hums, jams, leaks, or will not turn on is usually a simple repair, not a reason to panic. The important thing is safety: keep the power off and never put your hand inside the unit. We diagnose the real cause and either free it up or replace it.
Our work covers garbage disposal repair, garbage disposal installation, and garbage disposal replacement, from clearing a jam and resealing a leak to swapping in a new unit when the old one is done. We install dependable brands and size the disposal to how you actually use it. That mix of repair and replacement means you only pay for what you need.
You get upfront pricing and the service fee credited toward the work, with no pressure to replace a unit a quick repair will save. Many disposal jobs are fast, so we offer same-day service when the schedule allows.

Common Disposal Problems We Fix
Humming But Not Spinning
A garbage disposal humming but not spinning is almost always jammed. The motor is getting power but the flywheel is stuck, and forcing it just burns out the motor, so it needs to be freed the right way. Done correctly, a jam is usually a five-minute fix.
It Will Not Turn On
When the disposal will not turn on and makes no sound at all, it has usually tripped its reset or lost power at the switch or outlet. It is often a simple reset, but a dead motor means a replacement.
The Reset Button Will Not Work
If the garbage disposal reset button is not working, or pops back out as soon as you press it, the motor is likely overheated or failing. That is a sign the unit may be near the end.
Leaking From the Bottom
A garbage disposal leaking from the bottom usually means the internal seals have worn out, and that cannot be repaired. A unit leaking from the bottom needs to be replaced. The good news is a new unit installs quickly.
It Smells Bad
When a garbage disposal smells even after cleaning, food is trapped in the unit or the lines below it. We can clear it and check whether the smell is the disposal or the drain underneath. A clean disposal and a clear drain take the odor away.
Slow Draining or Frequent Jams
A disposal that drains slowly or jams often may be undersized, worn, or fed things it cannot handle. Knowing what can’t go in a garbage disposal prevents most of these repeat problems. Sometimes the real issue is the drain line, not the disposal.
Disposal Services We Handle
- Disposal Repair
Most garbage disposal repair is freeing a jam, resetting a tripped motor, or resealing a connection. We do it safely with the power off, and we tell you honestly when a repair is not worth it.
- Installation & Replacement
When a unit is leaking from the bottom or burned out, we handle garbage disposal installation and garbage disposal replacement, mounting the new unit and sealing every connection so it runs quiet and dry. We haul the old unit away when we are done.
- The Right Size
We help you choose between a half horsepower and a 3/4 garbage disposal based on your household. A half horsepower unit suits light use, while 3/4 horsepower handles a busy kitchen with fewer jams.
- Brands We Install
We handle InSinkErator installation, the Badger garbage disposal line, and Waste King units, so we can repair what you have or install a reliable replacement that fits your sink and budget. We carry common parts so most repairs happen on the first visit.
Why Homeowners Choose Us
Fixed Safely
A jammed disposal is a hand injury waiting to happen if you reach in. We clear it safely with the power off and the right tools, the way it should be done. A few minutes of doing it right beats a trip to urgent care.
Sealed, No Leaks
A disposal that is not mounted and sealed right drips into the cabinet below. We seal every connection so the new unit stays dry underneath.
Sized for Your Kitchen
A disposal too small for your use jams constantly. We match the horsepower to your household so it grinds through what you put in without bogging down.
Upfront Pricing, Same-Day When We Can
You get the price before we start and the service fee credited toward the work, plus same-day service when we can fit it in. Honest pricing, no upsell.
What to Expect From a Disposal Visit
We start by figuring out what is actually wrong, a jam, a tripped reset, a worn seal, or a motor that is done. Most disposal problems are clear within a few minutes of looking.
Then we tell you honestly whether a repair or a replacement is the better value, and give you the price before we begin. A jam or reset is a quick repair; a leak from the bottom or a failed motor means a new unit.
When the work is done, we run water and the disposal, check the seals, and look in the cabinet for leaks before we leave. You end up with a disposal that grinds cleanly and stays dry underneath. That is the whole job, working and leak-free.

Why the High Desert's Hard Water Wears Out Your Plumbing
Hard water is the High Desert’s biggest hidden plumbing problem. The U.S. Geological Survey classifies water above 10.5 grains per gallon as “very hard,” and local supplies often run near 17 grains per gallon. That mineral load builds scale inside pipes, fixtures, and water heaters, which is why a water softener is our most-requested upgrade.
Local High Desert Water Hardness
grains per gallon — local supplies often run near this figure
Local High Desert Water Hardness
the federal standard — our water exceeds it by 60%
Typical Water Heater Lifespan
often cut to 5–7 years in hard-water areas without a softener
The Fix
Pair a softener with whole-house filtration and you've covered both the scale and the taste.
Here’s what that scale costs you. A standard tank water heater is built to last 8 to 12 years, but in hard-water areas it can fail years sooner as sediment and scale eat away at the tank. Softening your water protects that investment, keeps faucets and showerheads flowing, and cuts the soap and detergent you go through.
Removes calcium and magnesium before they build scale. Our most-requested upgrade for High Desert homeowners.

Garbage Disposal Questions
Don’t see your question? Call us directly — we’re happy to walk through any plumbing question before you commit to anything.
Why is my disposal humming but not spinning?
A garbage disposal humming but not spinning is jammed. Turn off the switch and the power first, and never put your hand inside. Many units have a hex slot on the bottom and a reset button to free the jam, and if that does not work, the unit may need service or replacement.
What can't go in a garbage disposal?
Knowing what can’t go in a garbage disposal saves you most repairs: grease and oil, fibrous foods like celery and corn husks, starchy items like potato peels and pasta, bones, coffee grounds, and anything that is not food. These cause jams, clogs, and smells. Run cold water while the disposal is on to help flush what does go in.
Do I need a 1/2 HP or 3/4 HP disposal?
It comes down to use. In the half horsepower vs 3/4 garbage disposal choice, a half horsepower unit is fine for a small household with light use, while 3/4 horsepower handles a busier kitchen with fewer jams and tougher scraps. For most families, the 3/4 horsepower unit is the safer pick.
My disposal won't turn on or the reset won't hold. What now?
If the disposal will not turn on, check the switch, outlet, and breaker first. If the garbage disposal reset button is not working or keeps popping out, the motor is likely overheated or failing, and that usually means a replacement rather than a repair.
How much does garbage disposal installation cost?
Garbage disposal installation cost depends on the unit you choose and the condition of the existing mount and wiring. We give you the price upfront, with the service fee credited toward the work, so you can decide before anything starts.
