Sewer Line Repair in Hesperia & the High Desert
Find the Break, Fix It Clean
A broken sewer line does not fix itself, and the longer it waits, the worse the damage and the mess. We find the exact problem with a camera, then repair the line the right way, from a single cracked section to a full sewer line replacement. We repair residential and commercial sewer lines across Hesperia, Victorville, Apple Valley, Adelanto, Barstow, Big Bear, and the rest of San Bernardino County, with emergency help when sewage is backing up. You get an honest call on repair versus replacement and a price before any work begins.
Sewer Line Repair Done the Right Way
John’s Plumbing and Rooter is a licensed, family-owned sewer contractor that has repaired High Desert sewer lines since 2000. We work on residential, commercial, and municipal sewer lines across Hesperia, Victorville, Apple Valley, Adelanto, Barstow, Big Bear, and the wider San Bernardino County. Sewer repair is not a job for guesswork or shortcuts, and we treat it that way.
Most of the lines we repair fail for a few reasons. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, tree roots are among the most common causes of sanitary sewer overflows and line blockages, and out here they are the number one culprit, working into a joint and splitting it open over time. The rest is age and ground movement: a cracked sewer pipe from shifting High Desert soil, a broken sewer line at a settled joint, or in the worst cases a collapsed sewer pipe that has caved in and has to be replaced.
We do not dig first and ask questions later. We run a camera down the line to find the exact break and what caused it, then we give you a straight answer on sewer repair versus replacement. Sometimes a spot repair is all you need. Sometimes the smarter long-term move is to replace a failing run. Either way, you get the real options and a price before work starts, with the service fee credited toward the job.
We handle everything from a single cracked section to a complete sewer line replacement, and we stand behind the work we do. When sewage is already backing up into the house, that becomes an emergency, and we will get to you fast instead of putting you on a list for next week.

Signs of a Broken Sewer Line
Sewage Smell in the Yard
A sewage smell in your yard, indoors, or around a floor drain often means raw waste is escaping a cracked or broken line. A healthy sewer system is sealed and should not smell, so a persistent odor is a clear warning sign, and a sewer camera inspection finds the source.
Soggy or Sunken Spots in the Yard
Soggy spots in the yard, a patch of grass that is greener and lusher than the rest, or ground that has started to sink can all mean a sewer line is leaking underground and feeding the soil above it.
Multiple Drains Backing Up
When several drains back up at once, or the lowest drain overflows when you use water elsewhere, the problem is in the main sewer line, not one fixture. That points to a blockage or break in the line itself.
Slow Drains and Gurgling
Every drain in the house running slow, along with gurgling toilets, points to a main-line restriction. Caught early, that can mean a repair before it becomes a full failure.
Repeat Clogs From Roots
If you clear the same main-line clog again and again, tree roots in the sewer line are usually the reason. Roots regrow until the cracked section they entered through is repaired.
Foundation Cracks or a Sinkhole
A long-running sewer leak can wash out the soil under a slab or yard, leading to foundation cracks or a small sinkhole. This is advanced damage and needs to be looked at right away.
Sewer Pipe We Repair and Replace
- Cast Iron Sewer Pipe
Cast iron was used for decades and rusts and scales from the inside out as it ages. We repair what we can and handle cast iron sewer pipe replacement when a line has corroded through.
- Clay Sewer Pipe
Older High Desert homes often have a clay sewer pipe, which is durable but brittle, and its many joints are an easy entry point for roots. We repair cracked sections and replace runs that have failed.
- Orangeburg Pipe
Orangeburg is an old tar-paper pipe that softens and collapses with age. There is no real repairing it, so we handle orangeburg pipe replacement with modern, long-lasting pipe.
- Modern ABS and PVC
Newer homes use ABS or PVC, which holds up well but can still crack from ground movement or a bad original install. We repair the damaged section and tie it in clean.
Why Homeowners Choose Us
Licensed Sewer Contractor
We are a licensed, family-owned contractor with more than two decades on High Desert sewer lines. Sewer work is permitted, inspected work, and we do it by the book.
We Find It Before We Dig
A camera inspection pinpoints the break before we touch a shovel, so the repair is targeted and your yard is not torn up looking for the problem.
Repair When We Can, Replace When We Should
We will not sell you a full replacement when a spot repair will do, and we will not patch a line that cannot realistically be saved. You get the honest call either way.
Upfront Pricing and a Warranty
You get the price before work starts, the service fee credited toward the job, and a warranty on the repair. Ask us about the coverage of your specific job.
What to Expect From Your Sewer Repair
We start with a sewer camera inspection to find the exact location and cause of the problem. Seeing the break on screen means we can show you what we found, mark where it sits, and recommend the right fix instead of asking you to take our word for it.
From there, the repair depends on the line. A break in one spot may only need a targeted dig and a new section of pipe. When the line is a good candidate, trenchless sewer repair can fix or reline it with little digging at all. When a full run has failed, we move to sewer line replacement. We explain which path fits your situation and why, including how much sewer excavation, if any, is involved.
Once the repair is done, we test the line to confirm it flows and seals correctly, backfill and clean up the work area, and handle the permit and inspection where one is required. You get documentation of the work, which is useful if you plan to file a sewer line insurance claim, and a warranty on what we fixed.

Why the High Desert's Hard Water Wears Out Your Plumbing
Hard water is the High Desert’s biggest hidden plumbing problem. The U.S. Geological Survey classifies water above 10.5 grains per gallon as “very hard,” and local supplies often run near 17 grains per gallon. That mineral load builds scale inside pipes, fixtures, and water heaters, which is why a water softener is our most-requested upgrade.
Local High Desert Water Hardness
grains per gallon — local supplies often run near this figure
Local High Desert Water Hardness
the federal standard — our water exceeds it by 60%
Typical Water Heater Lifespan
often cut to 5–7 years in hard-water areas without a softener
The Fix
Pair a softener with whole-house filtration and you've covered both the scale and the taste.
Here’s what that scale costs you. A standard tank water heater is built to last 8 to 12 years, but in hard-water areas it can fail years sooner as sediment and scale eat away at the tank. Softening your water protects that investment, keeps faucets and showerheads flowing, and cuts the soap and detergent you go through.

Sewer Line Repair Questions
Don’t see your question? Call us directly — we’re happy to walk through any plumbing question before you commit to anything.
How much does sewer line repair cost?
It depends on where the break is, how deep the line runs, the pipe material, and whether a spot repair, trenchless repair, or full sewer line replacement is the right fix. We camera the line, then give you a clear price before any work starts, with the service fee credited toward the job.
Sewer repair vs replacement, which do I need?
If the damage is in one spot and the rest of the line is sound, a repair is usually the better value. If the pipe is old, root-filled, or failing in several places, replacement costs less over time than repeated repairs. The camera inspection tells us which makes sense for your line.
Can you help with a sewer line insurance claim?
We can provide the camera footage, photos, and a written description of the damage and repair to support a sewer line insurance claim. Coverage varies by policy, and many exclude gradual wear or root damage, so check with your insurer, but we will give you the documentation you need.
Do you replace cast iron, clay, and Orangeburg pipe?
Yes. We handle cast iron sewer pipe replacement, failed clay sewer pipe, and orangeburg pipe replacement, swapping old or collapsed pipe for modern, durable lines.
Do you offer a warranty on sewer line repair?
Yes, our repairs and replacements come with a warranty. The exact coverage depends on the job, so ask us and we will lay out the sewer line warranty in plain terms before you decide.
